SOFT-SHELL CRAB WEEK: With increased consumer demand for local products and sustainable foods, local Baltimore chefs are embracing Downtown Partnership of Baltimore’s 2nd annual Soft Shell Crab Week. Some of the region’s best restaurants will add savory soft shell specials to their menus, May 27 - June 3.

With the Gulf Coast oil spill threatening much of that nation’s crab catch it’s worth noting that Baltimore will remain crabbier than ever.  During Soft Shell Crab Week participating restaurants will serve locally grown, sustainable foods - foods like the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, Maryland’s signature crustacean and the featured guest on the menu. The shedding cycle of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab runs late May through September. Considered a true delicacy, the soft crab is prized by those who are first to sample a season's catch.

“Soft Shell Crab Week reminds us of the H.L. Mencken observation that there are fifty ways to prepare crabs and all of them are good,” said Downtown Partnership President Kirby Fowler. “Soft Shell Crab Week features top restaurants preparing a regional delicacy using local ingredients.

CONGRATULATIONS LUCKY LUCY Shares its Winnings at ALDO's: After winning the 135th Preakness, “Looking at Lucky” owners, Trainer Bob Baffert, and VIP Friends celebrated their victory at Aldo’s Ristorante Italiano in Baltimore’s Little Italy. Hall-of-Famer trainer Mr. Baffert was joined by “Looking at Lucky” owners Mike Pegram and partners Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, winning jockey Martin Garcia, NFL Coach Mike Tice, and retired NBA player and independent film producer Matt Othick at a post-win dinner party that included as many as 35 VIP guests and phone calls from around the world--from people like Oscar-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri--congratulating the victors.

The “Lucky” party raided the award-winning wine cellar at Aldo’s, celebrating with rare champagnes and Italian red wines while dining on a multi-course meal that included pan-fried soft shell crabs, crab cakes, veal chop “alla Milanese,” housemade gnocchi with wild boar ragu, pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage, among other dishes, said Sergio Vitale in a note he wrote CITYPEEK.

The business owners and customers from the area have been super supportive of our new endeavor...
