Soft Shell Crab Week is a Whale of a Time, Rehoboth Beach Restaurant Week

Did someone say SOFT SHELL CRAB SEASON? Well, Charm City, Baltimore, the city known for making spectacular crab dishes and the home of OLD BAY, is dishing up a special week of soft shells from June 4-15, 2015. (Seen left, owner of Regi’s American Bistro, Alan Morstein.)

 

But first, a bit of history on the baby crab. Soft shell crabs are at a growth stage when the crab sheds its outer shell. It must be removed from the water within a few hours of shedding, before the tender skin hardens into another larger shell. Soft shell crabs are sold whole. They're in season from April to mid-September and vary in size from 4-6 inches.

 

Restaurants around the Baltimore are featuring soft shell crabs on their specials menu, most trying to snag the biggest ones, which are called 'whales'. Some of the restaurants officially announcing specials for Soft-Shell Crab week in Baltimore are:

 

Alewife, Alexander’s Tavern, Apropoe’s, B&O American Brasserie, Charleston, Cinghiale, Diamond Tavern, Family Meal, Guy Fieri’s Kitchen + Bar, Jack Binion’s Steak, Johnny Sanchez, Kona Grill, La Scala, Miss Shirley’s Café, The Oceanaire, Pazo, Phillips Seafood, Regi’s American Bistro, Ryleigh’s Oyster Federal Hill & Mount Vernon, Sip Kitchen & Wine Bar (left), Ware House 518, and Wit & Wisdom.

 

SIP Kitchen & Wine Bar has a new talented Executive Chef, Tony Marcello. A graduate of Cuilnary Institute and a veteran Chef in the Maryland culinary world, Chef Tony's soft shell offering is seen left. Marcello describes his dish as "Cornmeal dusted soft-shell crabs atop roasted corn and black bean cakes and a sweet corn bisque."

 

The official soft shell crab week is an initiative organized by Dine Downtown Baltimore, a Downtown Partnership of Baltimore to promote Downtown Baltimore’s growing culinary scene.

 

Most recently, in Rehoboth Beach, DE, I enjoyed a spectacular meal of pan sauteed, soft shell crabs over a bed of julienne veggies and salad dressed with a truffle oil vinaigrette (seen left)at JAM BISTRO.

 

Word on the street from SoDel Concepts is they are planning a Soft Shell Crab Month at their 8 restaurants in the Delaware/MD beach area!  The SoDel Concepts restaurants include Fish On Bar & Grill in Lewes, Lupo Di Mare Italian Kitchen and Papa Grande's Coastal Taqueria in Rehoboth, Matt's Fish Camp and Bluecoast Seafood Grill + Raw Bar in North Bethany, NorthEast Seafood Kitchen in Ocean View, Catch54 Fish House and Papa Grande's Coastal Taqueria in Fenwick Island.
