Mt. Washington Tavern Comes Back Stronger than Ever, Locals Flock Written by CITYPEEK Food Blogger, Briana Berg.    After stepping in to the warm, welcoming entrance of the newly renovated Mt. Washington Tavern, it was clear to me that the wait was over – the Tavern was back and better than ever! After a multi-alarm fire ravished through the restaurant, destroying the interior and much of the exterior of the building last fall, anxious regulars to the Mt. Washington staple patiently awaited the reopening – almost one full year later.

“The restaurant has been an institution in Baltimore for more than 30 years and there isn’t a day that has gone by over the past year that I haven’t answered an inquiry about when we would reopen,” said Rob Frisch, co-owner of Mt. Washington Tavern. Describing the restaurant as Tavern 2.0, Frisch and partner Dave Lichty, kept the style and classic American menu the same.

The biggest difference to the Tavern is the flow of the restaurant. Now, patrons enter the restaurant on Sulgrave Avenue and either head to a dining room on the left, a new long, open floor plan bar on the right, or head up the stairs for more formal dining and the brand new SkyBar with a seasonal outdoor deck. The walls are adorned with old jockey Silks, maps from the 1920’s of Baltimore Wards, and Pimlico Race Course memories. Beautiful stonework lines the dining areas and bar areas, but the classic shuffleboard still remains – a memory of what the Tavern is to so many people.

Our sampling of the menu, kicked up a notch with a seafood twist, sported delicious Beef Carpaccio made with arugula, lemon zest, and sun dried tomatoes, Saltimbocca with crisp prosciutto, mini broiled crab crakes, and a plethora of other Tavern specialties, new and old. The veteran bartender, happy to be back in his comfort zone, poured drinks more than worthy of a restaurant opening.

For more information on Mt Washington Tavern, visit their Facebook page. The grand re-opening party for the public will be November 21st, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and you won’t want to miss it. Cheers to Mt. Washinton Tavern!
