Two new modern, ‘foodie’ restaurants, 101 Deli Bar and The Charles, have blossomed in the heart of Federal Hill’s S Charles Street, within steps of one another. And, I have sampled both to give you a soundbite of the food, drinks and atmosphere.

Opened softly, in October, 101 Deli Bar is the third restaurant by ownership team Andrew Dunlap, Michael McDevitt and Sean White. Located in a completely renovated space, with an inviting garage door as an entrance and spot for al fresco dining, the new 101 Deli Bar, joins the restaurant group of its next-door neighbor Banditos, with whom they share a pass-thru door, and Wayward Bar & Kitchen, across the street. The Executive Chef, former Sous Chef at Cinghiale, is Doug Watson and ask for Wine Manager Vincenzo DiPino to help select a glass of vino. DiPino was former wine manager of Wayward and now also spearheads the list at the new restaurant. The new wine list focuses on sustainable, boutique-y, wines that pair well with the food.

The food is not your average deli, move over corned beef and pastrami and make way for house-made smoked meats, charcuterie pairing with cheeses, sandwiches and burgers and multiple pickled veggie items. plates like smoked and fried wings, poutines and grilled spouts sprinkled with cured bacon on a bed of tomato relish. And Tuesdays it is pick your own gourmet burger night and a pint of Natty Boh for $10.

Open daily. Weekend brunch menu is scheduled to start in early November.

The Charles Baltimore is the reincarnation of the former Mad River Bar, and, for those that remember, the spot, it has been completely renovated, top to bottom. Partners, John Durkin, Mike Mastellone, Andrew Wheeler and David Yike, have spearheaded the revamp creating a sexy, yet approachable gathering, relaxing space. Seats are available at a sleek, long bar downstairs on the left, family, communal tables and banquettes, both upstairs and downstairs. Yes, chic banquettes have replaced the old Mad River booths. And, the bathrooms are all spiffed up and larger than some Federal Hill bedrooms.

The food is modern American with various fusion-inspired twists, headed by Chef Cory Pastor, formally at Nickel Taphouse in Mt. Washington. He likes to call the menu ‘global fusion’. Front of the house manager, Bryan Subock also hails from Nickle Taphouse. The menu items are all designed to be shared like Cobb Salad Deviled Eggs, General Tso Chicken Wings, served with grilled broccoli, crab hummus, Cuban Stuffed Pretzels, and what staff deems to be the ‘best burger in town’.

The wine list is simple and plans are to expand and add to offerings. Of course, local craft beers are on tap and multiple creative cocktails are available. DJ music plays Friday and Saturday nights 11 pm-close. Weekend brunch is 10 am -3 pm. Be sure to say hi to bar manager, Harrison Livingston.
