Yountville Homes its First Beer Tasting Room, partners with local winery

Primary tabs

A partnership has been sealed between Napa Valley's The Good Life Wine Collective, owners of both Handwritten Wine and Jessup Cellars, located in Yountville, and Mad Fritz, a local St. Helena artisanal brewer.

The Yountville Zoning Development and Review Board and Yountville Town Council met individually to discuss and then to approve the addition of a taproom/beer tasting room permit in Yountville. It passed with overwhelming votes of 'yays' on June 20, 2024. Town Council members were enthused at the thought of adding some variety to the what is now 17 wine tasting rooms in the quaint town which embodies just 1.2 miles. The new venue is set to open in July 2024.

Since Yountville openied it's first Tasting Room with Jessup Cellars in 2015, no other beverage brand has called Yountville home. In fact Yountville zoning laws up to this point, only allowed for wine tasting rooms, with 25% allocated for retail sales in their spaces. The new location  at 6720 Washington St, Yountville, CA 94599, is to be named Mad Fritz at Jessup Cellars. Brewery operations will continue at its St Helena location.

The  small interior of Mad Fritz at Jessup Cellars will be around 320 square feet and additional outdoor seating for wine and beer service. The Mad Fritz space will be open seven days a week from noon to 7 p.m, occupying what is known as the Cottage at Jessup Cellars. Pretzels, Mad Fritz artisanal beer and coffee will be available for purchase, as well as wines served, by the glass offered al fresco on the Cottage's terrace space. Jessup Cellars, touts its past awards of being "the friendliest tasting room in Napa Valley". We expect now less from Mad Fritz at Jessup Cellars.

Tony McClung, President of The Good Life Wine Collective, present at the Town Council meeting on June 20, 2024, called the partnership "a win-win" and believes that Mad Fritz beer will reach a different type of consumer than Jessup and will serve as an alternative for those who either don’t drink wine or just want a break from wine tasting. The Town Council members whole-heartedly agreed.

What's in the name Mad Fritz?

Nile Zacherle and his wife Whitney Fisher, both winemakers, founded Mad Fritz Brewing Co. in St. Helena in 2014. Mad Fritz' name is a mix of their children’s names, Madeleine (Maddie) and Frederick (Fritz).

Their beer brand brewing process is akin to wine methods, very different from most traditional beers, to date. Their beers are barrel aged, in French oak barrels, using custom equipment for sampling, racking as well as for unique flavor development from each barrel selection. The bottles of beer are 27 ounce bottles, a standard 750 milliliter (mL) of wine contains 25.4 fluid ounces, which is just over 1.5 pints. The beer bottles cost around $35 each.
