In 1816, Baltimore was the first city to illuminate the streets with gas lanterns, revolutionizing the urban landscape forever by transforming the city with light.
Two hundred years later, Light City Baltimore - a festival of light, music and innovation - will paint Baltimore with a canvas of light, and illuminate the world with the brilliance of the brightest thinkers.
The inaugural Light City Baltimore, a non-profit festival of light, music and innovation is taking place March 28-April 3, 2016. Premiering in 2016, Light City Baltimore is the first large-scale, international light festival in the United States, homegrown in Baltimore, Maryland. The festival of Lights (not Hannukah!) will provide a backdrop for the celebration of ideas, ingenuity and creativity through art, music and innovation.
The festival features the 1.5 mile BGE Light Art Walk along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor with 50 attractions including illuminated visual artworks, street theater, musical performances and concerts, all free and open to the public. Attendees of the inaugural Light City Baltimore festival are encouraged to download the free app prior to their visit to see all that the festival has to offer including the festival map, schedule and general festival information.
Baltimore's Inner Harbor is the northern-most end of the Northwest branch of the Patapsco River, which empties into the Chesapeake Bay, home to well over 300 species of fish and birds. Environmental impact is an important consideration to the region, and was reflected in designing artworks for display along its harbor. Many of the installations utilize sustainability as its subject matter and includes sustainability measures. Sustainability measures defined as artwork that is human powered, or work that utilize
s solar panels to charge batteries, or one that filters water, or one that utilizes LED technology, etc. Light City will be compiling energy consumption totals for all artworks and
performances.
