The Hughes Family Outdoor Theater features seating for 1000+ on the natural amphitheater formed by Federal Hill; a 30-foot wide screen held from above by Adam Kurtzman's Giant Golden Hand; a twinkling view of the city; and an amazing, all-ages, community experience. In the event of nasty weather, the show of the Flicks will be moved inside to the 3rd floor. AVAM officials watch the weather reports closely and will announce the change as soon as they know via Facebook (facebook.com/theavam) and Twitter (@TheAVAM) channels. One of Little Italy’s more popular events, sponsored by the Original Little Italy Restaurant Association, the Open Air Film Fest has thrived since 1999. Movies are projected onto the outside wall of Ciao Bella Restaurant in the Da Mimmo Ristorante parking lot from a row home across the street. Folks arrive early to set up lawn chairs, listen to live entertainment, stroll the neighborhood and eat at one of Little Italy's many restaurants.

A bit of history: Instrumental in allowing this event to be created was the late "Mr. John" Pente who died in 2011, at age 100. He allowed a movie projector to be set up in his third floor bedroom window. His nephew, the late Ray Lancelotta who died in 2014, had then purchased the home and generously continued the Film Fest tradition. For 2015, the Lancelotta family continues to supportst the Film Fest.

And the movies are:

The Jewish Museum of Maryland is hosting its 1st ever Summer Movie Nights.

"On one hand, the films are an invitation to local residents and business patrons to participate in the life of JMM.  On the other hand, bringing visitors from other parts of the city onto our streets at night sends a powerful message about the future of Lloyd Street and the yet-to-be-developed parcels that adjoin us," states Marvin Pinkert, Executive Director of JMM.

The outdoor screenings are scheduled for

Sunday, August 9 (The Great Dictator)

Sunday, August 23 (Gentleman’s Agreement).

The museum will stay open during the film.  And admission to the museum after 5pm will also be free.  We’re setting up picnic tables in our courtyard if you would like to bring your own food for a pre-movie picnic.  We’ve invited food trucks to join us – look for an update on who is coming in our August 7 Museum Matters.

For those who really want to make a day of it there is even an afternoon program to go with each film.

At 3pm on Aug. 9, Dr. David Ward of the University of Pittsburgh will be speaking on “Charlie Chaplin’s Great Dictator: Fighting Fascism with a Movie” At 3pm on August 23 Dr. Greg Metcalf of MICA will be offering his take on the world of Jewish film.

Both lectures are included in the price of daytime admission.  (By the way, we also have a third film offering in August on the 16th at 5:30pm – we’re showing this one indoors because of its early start time – the film is the animated classic An American Tail).

The films themselves will be shown on an inflatable 9’ tall by 12’ wide screen which we’re setting up in the parking lot across the street from our front door.  The films will start at 8pm to get us close to sunset.  Like their neighbors at St. Leo’s, our film fest is a BYOC* event (bring your own chairs).
