April 24, 2015-get ready for Summer in a glass & Sauvignon Blanc Day 2015! Many wine enthusiasts will be invited to uncork the popular varietal that started in Bordeaux, France and is quite vibrant today in New Zealand and Chile. According to the Wines of New Zealand, Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 86% of wine exported from New Zealand; exports that are wre worth over $1 billion annually.

 

A bit of history on the grape via some help by Wikipedia: Sauvignon blanc is a green-skinned grape variety that originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The SB grape name stems from the French words sauvage ("wild") and blanc ("white") due to its origins as an indigenous grape in South West France. Sauvignon blanc is described as crisp, dry with fresh citrus elements. It is  planted in many of the world's wine regions, The grape is also a component of the famous dessert wines from Sauternes and Barsac. Sauvignon blanc blossoms in France, Chile, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Washington and California statrs. Some New World Sauvignon blancs, particularly from

California, may also be called "Fume Blanc".

St Supery Estate Winery, which started the social media event years ago, is putting on their 5th annual global online celebration of  Sauvignon Blanc, along with our partners and fellow Sauvignon Blanc enthusiasts, New Zealand Wine and Summertime in a Glass. #SauvBlanc Day on April 24th is an entire day for people across the world to celebrate a one of our favorite wine varietals. The “hashtag” (#) signifies a topic of conversation on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest and is the term to search for to follow the ongoing online conversation on these

social media channels, states their press relations site.

#SauvBlanc Day kicks off in New Zealand, the home of Sauvignon Blanc, on the 24th April with celebrations continuing around the globe with themed lunches, tastings and events taking place in Melbourne, Hong Kong, London, San Francisco, Toronto and New York.

Wine Marlborough will be hosting a Marlborough #SauvBlanc celebration to honour our world-famous variety alongside sumptuous local seafood and other delicious gourmet local fare prepared by Gibb’s on Godfrey as well as live music from Midge McCleary.

NZ Wines invite all winery ‘tweeters’ to "bring along a bottle or two of your Sauvignon Blanc to share and enjoy amongst friends and industry colleagues. This year we would love you to bring examples of the following to highlight the stylistic diversity of our flagship #SauvBlanc:"

  • ‘Classical’ Marlborough Styles
  • Alternative Styles (e.g. barrel fermented)
  • ‘Turn Back Time’ - 2008 wines from the 1st #SauvBlanc Day
