Nothing says summer like a trip to the beach – am I right? And Bethany Beach is one of the best resort towns on the Eastern Shore for families to travel to for some relaxation. But who wants to pop out of town without the family pup?

It can be a struggle for us travelers who are also pet lovers plagued by a lack of quality places that allow Fido (or Barkdale… or Chew Barca… or Miss Sugarpants… we’re not judging names here!) to join in the fun. However, the newly remodeled Meris Gardens in Bethany Beach solves the problem altogether, with top notch digs that are dog friendly.

Previously a little known motel under a different name and ownership, Meris Gardens is now a quaint bed and breakfast in a delightfully peaceful wooded setting with only a 15 minute walk to the beach, or to all of the shops and restaurants along the main drag.

While Meris Gardens has rebranded itself as a bed and breakfast, the main structure itself still has a motel set-up, allowing guests to easily access their own rooms through a private entry, rather than parading the pups through an entire home, like at a traditional B&B.

The grounds of the property are paved with winding pathways that are flanked by gardens and manicured grass. A cozy size, the property is perfect for children to run around and remain in sight, or to be able to give the pooch some exercise.

Bikes are available as well, at no charge. If you have a purse sized pooch, you could certainly transport her in a basket on the bike, or bigger dogs can get their daily run in while you pedal peacefully.

Worth noting, as well, is that the structure itself seems well built, with thick walls, since no neighborly activity could be heard in the three days that I enjoyed at Meris Gardens. So, if your furry best friend gets a little frazzled by sounds of other dogs, it’s unlikely it will be an issue here.

Let Sue, the manager, know that you are bringing your adorable four legged friend, and she will set you up with the best room for you and your darling doggy. Word is, the corner rooms are best.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a comfy beach stay with your pups, in a warm and inviting space, Meris Gardens is the place to check out on the Eastern Shore!
