The Prime Rib at Maryland Live Casino

Primary tabs

The Prime Rib, designed by brothers Buzz and Nick BeLer to evoke the elegant supper clubs of 1940's Manhattan, opened in Baltimore, Md. in 1965. It has continued to be a Mid-Atlantic hotspot in Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia institution. It is known The Prime Rib is renowned for tender cuts of USDA Prime steaks, the freshest seafood selections, an expansive wine list, and an atmosphere that is as elegant as it is comfortable.

I was invited me to sample and tour the newly licensed concept operating in the Maryland Live! Casino. As I have grown up enjoying the elegant, perfectly orchestrated The Prime Rib Supper Club, complete with male-only servers in tuxedos for multiple family occasions, I was eager to go. I was interested to see how the casual, casino located in Arundel Mills' Maryland Live! complex, would translate the concept I have known and loved for all of my life. (I know, lucky gal my parents liked steak.)

My highlights were dear pal, Petra Compel, enjoying the salmon appetizer bite multiple times, the great restaurant tour by Maryland Live! Carmen Gonzales and meeting Restaurant Manager, Jean-Jacques Retourne of Michel Richard's Citronelle Restaurant in DC and Chef Rudy Volpe of Carmine's NYC and DC fame. Yes, all of these happenings were delightful but, my highlight was re-meeting the owner of The Prime Rib empire, Buzz Beler and telling him what an impact he has had on my hospitality life and my family's special occasions. His restaurant has been an institution in my life and has taught me so much on what to do correctly in hospitality.

Some items passed to sample, mostly in tiny bite portions were more on the seafood side, than meat for a steakhouse and included: oysters Rockefellar, smoked salmon, cream cheese on rye cut-outs, mini crab cakes, lamb chops, tiny lacquered bacon dressed with a dollop of egg (delish), and seared tuna bites on a Carr's cracker with aioli. I, of course, sampled the wines by the glass menu and enjoyed a Mer Soleil Chardonnay and a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The staff was extremely friendly and unlike it's namesake parent, hires women as well as men on its staff. Sadly, I didn't see any prime rib to sample so hope to be invited back. :-)

The location has a number of different rooms creating multiple vibes that the staff explains mixes "sophisticated ambiance with a contemporary flair". It starts with an open bar area, capacity of around 75. Different than the other supper clubs of its namesake, this one has multiple flat screens with sporting events on the screen. The execs want this to be a get-away from the rest of the casino life. A piano player is on the keyboards nightly and an additional bass player can be heard on the weekends. An impressive cigar selection is housed on the wall by the dining rooms.

The bar and main dining room are separated by a  private dining room seating 14-16. A casino patio area with two tops, soon to also overlook blackjack table when table gaming comes to the venue. A large dining room similar to its Mid-Atlantic Prime Rib counterparts is the center of the elegant venue and can seat up to 100 or so. And, most interesting is a 75 seat, al fresco, patio that is complete with a retractable roof, large firepit on one side (might suggest it be more centralized), comfortable outdoor furniture and is a place for cigar lovers to recline and folks to go outside from the slots to enjoy a meal and drink.

Throughout besides the tradition, yet smaller, framed, French posters and leopard paterrn carpeting, are most impressive glass cabinets housing the restaurant's substantial wine list. The structures for the juice scale from floor to the ceiling.
