In celebration of the US Navy Memorial’s 25th Anniversary, guests are invited to a special ‘Author on Deck’ book lecture in which Larry Berman will present his latest work, Zumwalt: The Life and Times of admiral elmo russell ‘bud’ Zumwalt, jr. (Harper Collins Publishers; October 9, 2012).  Zumwalt is a compelling portrait of the controversial admiral widely regarded as the founder of the modern Navy, who implemented major strategic innovations that endure to this day.

In Zumwalt, Berman takes an admiring yet evenhanded look at the life and career of Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt, the charismatic Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and “the Navy’s most popular leader since WWII” (Time). Embodying honor, courage and commitment over a career spanning forty years, Zumwalt rose to the top echelon of the U.S. Navy, notably as a commander of all Navy forces in Vietnam.  After retiring from service in 1974, he spearheaded a citizen education and mobilization effort that helped thousands of Vietnam veterans secure reparations.

Following his presentation, Berman will be available for a Q&A session and book signing.
