Hampden Steakhouse opens-ESPN ZONE closes outlets DC-Baltimore-NYC

As reported by the LA TIMES--Disney to close most ESPN Zone outlets-Baltimore-DC-NYC definitely shut down!

Walt Disney Co. is shutting down most of its ESPN Zone stores, a chain of sports-themed restaurants in seven cities, according to a person familiar with the matter. The only outlets to remain open are those tied to a Disney property, such as the Downtown Disney shopping district in Anaheim.

ESPN Zone opened in 1998 to capitalize on ESPN's brand while bringing Disney's family-friendly atmosphere to the sports bar concept. The upscale eateries serve burgers and brews as walls of big-screen TVs beam sporting events into the dining area. Separate rooms provide access to interactive games such as virtual golf.

"Since their inception, the Zones have served sports fans very well," an ESPN spokesman said. "But from a pure business perspective, the economics have been challenging." Yup, studies everywhere show more and more people are cutting back on eating out.

In addition to Anaheim, Disney operates ESPN Zone restaurants in Baltimore, Chicago, Las Vegas, New York and Washington. The company also licenses the ESPN Zone brand to a restaurant at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles and POWER PLANT LIVE in BALTIMORE.

But while ESPN Zone is closing its doors, a new bar and restaurant is opening just down the street. Nashville-based Dick's Last Resort, which has seven locations, has signed a 6,200 square foot lease at 621 E. Pratt St. Known for offering free beer on the second Tuesday of every week--get it--yup "service with sarcasm" is what we are known for states Kitchen Manager Clay who we met today. Dick's expects an opening end of June.

The Mill Steakhouse Tavern in Hampden has replaced what was for less than a year, the new KOLPERS Restaurant and Lounge,  by owners who set out to give Hampden something its never had, a Steakhouse!

The Mill Steakhouse Tavern restaurant is designed to bring back some of the History to the Hampden area. In fact, part of the building was a portion of the Hampden/Woodberry Mills at one time.

The Mill is known for their delicious prime rib and several other different cuts of steaks. We personally cannot wait to try the brie crab soup described as their signature soup-a luscious blend of brie cheese, cream and crab and the Baby back ribs marinated in a Jack Daniels BBQ sauce and the Salmon Oscar-Oven roasted salmon topped with crab imperial
