CITY CAFE, in depth PEEK of the Cheers Bar of Mt Vernon

CITY CAFE in Mt Vernon--CITY CAFE, in depth PEEK of the Cheers Bar of Mt Vernon-- not just a coffee and sandwich spot anymore. Recently sat down with Bruce Bodie, co-owner of CITY CAFE with Gino Cardinale. The CITY CAFE has always been know for fantastic coffee drinks, hot and cold, OASIS frozen drinks, cakes, cookies, fresh sandwiches, but wait, enter Executive Chef CHAD GAUSS. CHAD is now celebrating his 1-year anniversary with CITY CAFE. In his tenure, CITY CAFE's menu got a major overhaul bringing a higher gourmet, more upscale experience to the dining room. Bruce explains, "We're definitely not just a place for burgers anymore--did you know we now have options like duck confit, sea bass and sesame encrusted tuna on the (click) dinner menu? And, we have started a steak night for only $16 every Monday night."

But, after studying the menu, quickly I found it not to be just a steak night with a side of average side option of mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Here, you have a choice of grilled or blackened steak-multiple options of cuts, types (local sustainable fish and home-grown meats like bison is an option), pork or fish. Then choose one item from a variety of toppings-horseradish creme or fried onions, then choose two (2) from more upscale sides.Only $16!

Frequent cafe goers know the desserts are always a specialty! Did you know CITY Cafe is dog friendly?--Your dog will get a specially baked biscuit from neighbor Pretentious Pooch. The doggie biscuit is a pup (perhpas it is the owners new puppy George's look-alike?) with a chef's cap saying City Cafe--yup, dogs welcome here-outside seating, of course! Oh, it includes a $2 coupon to Prententious Pooch around the corner on Cathedral Street next to FLOWERS by CHRIS.

CITYPEEK suggested a wine bottle pairing deal which was graciously accepted as an idea. Find info on CITY Cafe and please share a review of CITY CAFE-click: HERE

Oh, did I mention--we just got wind that the soft shell crabs have arrived--save my plate, please, Chef Chad Gauss and congratulations on your 1 year anniversary!

I recently dined at City Cafe for the first time prior to a show at the Lyric. A friend of mine who had recently attended Le Cordon Bleu was visiting from France (!), so I was pressed to find a spot close by with a menu that would be appreciated. I took a chance on City Cafe and we were both impressed. I love the open environment, service (our waiter was fabulous with recommendations and wine paring suggestions), and of course, the food. We had the rubbed tuna to start, I had the Chilean seabass and she the ribeye. Dessert was equally as wonderful with the trio. I'm not typically a fan of bread pudding, but try it--it was delicious!

I will most certainly be going back again soon.
