The First Annual Watermelon Festival: Saturday, August 15
Around the 1920s and 1930s, vacationing families in Rehoboth purchased watermelons from roving produce salesmen called “hucksters.” Most families did not have ice boxes and refrigerators were not yet common. When they bought a whole watermelon, people carved their initials into the melon and stored them in the icehouse. We celebrate this tradition today with the Watermelon Festival. The Watermelon Festival will be held at Grove Park and the Rehoboth Beach Museum at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 from 4-7:00 PM. Admission $2 adults, $1 children 6 to 17, children 5 and under are free. Admission to the festival also includes admission to the Rehoboth Beach Museum. Watermelon seed spitting and eating contests. Crafts. Food available for purchase. Please call the Rehoboth Beach Museum for more information at (302) 227-7310.
