 Author of Gabby, A Story of Courage and Hope, Captain Kelly will speak about ambition, challenge, sense of duty, family and the power of true grit.  Already a celebrated American, Kelly became the center of international attention after the January 2011 assassination attempt on his wife, former US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  Kelly has been on the covers of USA Today and People and named one of Esquire’s 2011 “Americans of the Year.”  He also comes to us now as the partner of someone living with aphasia.

What is Aphasia?

Imagine losing your ability to speak, read, write, or understand – while at the same time, your intellectual capacities and memory remain intact.  This debilitating and frustrating condition is called “aphasia,” from the Greek word for “speechlessness.”  Commonly caused from a stroke, brain tumor, head injury, or neurological disorder, aphasia is the result of damage to the language center of the brain and is often mistaken for deafness, psychiatric illness, alcoholism, or developmental disability. Aphasia does not discriminate – it can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time.

 About SCALE:

The Snyder Center for Aphasia Life Enhancement (SCALE) is a 501c3 nonprofit community treatment center in Baltimore City established in 2008. Services offered at SCALE are designed to decrease the social isolation experienced by individuals living with aphasia and their family members. It provides a community for peers with similar goals and opportunities to work with trained professionals who support and guide individuals and families living with aphasia.

SCALE improves the quality of life for people with living with aphasia and their families by offering:

• *Programs and services to improve speech and re-engagement in life
• *A therapeutic “life enhancing” environment that fosters successful living with aphasia in a necessary social environment
• *Educational materials, training and support to family members
