Background on event and additional details:

In November last year, Facebook announced the launch of a new program to invest in small businesses across the country. The program, Community Boost, (https://www.facebook.com/business/news/introducing-facebook-community-boost), is designed to help small businesses grow and to give more people the digital skills they need to compete in the new economy. Facebook Community Boost will be visiting 50 cities this year and will be in Baltimore from November 12 to November 14.

Today, we are announcing that registration is open for anyone who wants to come to Community Boost which kicks off on November 12 at Lord Baltimore (20 W Baltimore St). You can learn more about the event and share with you audience and community to register here: https://fbcommunityboost.com/cities/baltimore-md/.

Why Baltimore? When Facebook heard that Baltimore wanted more digital skills training, it became a driving force behind why it is one of the cities to host Community Boost. A survey by Morning Consult of small businesses in Baltimore found:

Demand for digital skills: When we spoke to Baltimore small businesses about what are important factors when hiring employees, over 8 in 10 (84%) said an individual's digital skills were important. When asked about where a candidate went to school, less than half (47%) said that was an important factor. We're seeing in city after city that the future of work is changing and we know that companies like us have a role to play.

Gap in social media skills: Baltimore small business owners also see social media skills as critical to their success. For example, nearly 3 in 4 (74%) small business workers in your community said that creating a social media presence is important to growing their business, but less than one in five (16%) said that their skills in this area were excellent.

Demand for non-FB training: We also know that growing a business is about a lot more than Facebook. When we asked the Baltimore community about the broader skills they feel are important to growing a business, 6 in 10 (60%) small business workers said that they were interested in coursework related to recruiting talented employees, so we're including courses there as well.

Demand for privacy training: Nearly 8 in 10 (78%) of small businesses surveyed in Baltimore said that ensuring customer privacy and security is important to running a business, but less than one in three (29%) say that their skills in this area are excellent.
