Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the nation and famous symbol of North Carolina. The lighthouse site houses a visitor's center that is open throughout the year and houses displays on the island's maritime history. The beacon from the light can be seen some 20-miles out to sea and have warned sailors for more than 100 years of the treacherous Diamond Shoals, the shallow sandbars which extend some 14 miles out into the ocean off Cape Hatteras
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a public, non-profit, educational institution. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation, advancement and presentation of the maritime history and shipwrecks of the North Carolina Outer Banks from the earliest periods of exploration and/or colonization to the present day, with particular emphasis in the periods from 1524 to 1945. The Museum preserves, researches, exhibits and interprets its collections for the benefit of the general public and specialized audiences. The Museum serves its diverse audiences in order to inspire appreciation, encourage discovery, and promote and an active, responsible understanding of the maritime heritage of the Outer Banks itself and in relation to that of the United States and the broader history of seafaring.
Ocracoke Island
Located at the southernmost tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and boasts almost 16 miles of pristine, undeveloped beaches. Accessible only by ferry, private boat or plane, Ocracoke is an oasis for the family, casual tourist, nature lover, fisherman, or recreational boater. A historic fishing village turned tourist attraction; the village of Ocracoke is home to the island's 800 year round residents and offers all the conveniences and services of a modern vacation destination with the laid back attitude of a place lost in time.
