Federal Hill gains a Spanish Tapas Bar

<img src="http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs186.snc3/19370_337395582921_589062921_4623462_8175879_s.jpg" style="float: left;
Centro Tapas Bar www.centrotapasbar.com serving Spanish and South American Tapas Bar in Federal Hill, is opening this weekend in the spot where Bicycle was located at 1444 Light Street.

Walking by the other day, we were delighted to see that something new would open in what was once a hot spot created by the first owner Chef Barry Rumsey's, Bicycle Restaurant which he ran with his wife, Debbie from 1999-2006. Once Chef Rumsey left the restaurant, it never regained the panache it once had. The Rumseys moved to wine-lovers paradise, in Mosier, Oregon, and opened Now The Good River Restaurant + Thirsty Woman Pub.

Now, back to CENTRO TAPAS BAR-We met Chef/Owner George Dailey who explains he was born in England, but brought up in Venezuala. "The word "Centro" means downtown or center. The restaurant embodies the very same hip, casual atmosphere that is the essence of downtown dining," he explains on his opentable listing.

Chef George has been running ON THE HILL Cafe & Market on John Street in BOLTON HILL so he is no stranger to running a restaurant. Chef's goal is to offer farm-to-table dishes, authentic, but with a twist. Proudly, Chef George showed off his authentic Cerrano ham stand which hails all the way from Spain.

His Managing Partner Yvonne Edwardsen was busy planning her wine menu with guru, Greg of Reliable Churchill. CENTRO is set to be a Spanish Tapas Bar with Latin American infusion.

Little has changed in the restaurant since the Ramseys sold the spot to the former owner, Chef Nick Batey, who now owns Ullswater on Fort Avenue. But the quaint spot now housing CENTRO, is a rare find. It is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of South Baltimore's busy Light Street has a charm unlike others. There is a tremendous benefit in having a lovely garden out back where diners relish sitting when weather permits.

Chef George says that the garden, patio dining will return, but he is most interested to get the restaurant opened asap. Grand opening is this Saturday, March 20- now also find CENTRO on opentable.com- Book now:

CENTRO is opening on the heels and just around the corner at 1500 S. Hanover, of another grand Federal Hill spot set to quietly open this week, BLUE GRASS--we covered that here.

CENTRO HOURS: Dinner: Tuesday & Wednesday: 5:00pm - 10:00pm, Thursday - Saturday: 5:00pm - 11:00pm, Sunday: 5:00pm - 10:00pm

PACK your knives, er, your bags, and come with us to the nation's Capitol! Sources close to CITYPEEK tell us that TOP CHEF SEASON 7 2010, airing on BRAVO TV, is said to be heading to WASHINGTON DC. We also learned that their home perch, where the TOP CHEF DC participants will sleep, will most likely be in the heart of DUPONT CIRCLE. Dupont Circle in DC is central to many great locations, restaurants--shooting begins April 2010. Top Chef has skyrocketed the careers of some local DC-area born chefs in recent years:

Fom last season, BRYAN VOLTAGGIO-VOLT RESTAURANT,and his younger brother of two years, MICHAEL VOLTAGGIO, then in LA both from Frederick, MD and MIKE ISABELLA of DC's ZAYTINYA-TOP CHEF LAS VEGAS. CARLA HALL, ALCHEMY CATERERS, TOP CHEF NEW YORK 2008. SPIKE MENDOLSOHN, GOOD STUFF EATERY, CAPITOL HILL TOP CHEF season past.

The DC area hosts a 40,000 SF WHOLE FOODS, the largest WHOLE FOODS in the DC area on P Street. This is the shopping market of choice for the show. It is located in the heart of DC, an understated, yet highly regarded foodie capitol. Not to mention the sites of DC and location is quite patriotic! Oh, and the OBAMAS are noted foodies who love to go out and eat in their city.

Bravo's Top Chef website defines their mission best "Top Chef offers a fascinating window into the competitive, pressure-filled environment of world-class cookery and the restaurant business at the highest level. The series features seventeen aspiring chefs who compete for their shot at culinary stardom and the chance to earn the prestigious title of "Top Chef" Each episode holds two challenges for the chefs. The first is a quickfire test of their basic abilities and the second is a more involved elimination challenge designed to test the versatility and inventiveness of the chefs..."

Just an aside, MTV just hosted it's 20-something reality TV show THE REAL WORLD in DC.

And, drumroll please---The latest is this week which we read about is Restaurateur Jordan Naftel, well-known from Jordon's Steakhouse, announces, on twitter, his @GrilledCaesar truck coming soon to Howard County area! Jordan closed his Ellicott City restaurant on the Main Street, in the core of the town last year. We knew he would resurface and what better than re-emerge with his famous Caesar dressing--which we remember oozes with garlic and creamy dressing. Also, enjoy the sweet smell and taste of creme brule offered on the truck! Am I dreaming? Creme Brule on wheels? Yes! Both salad and caesar salad will set you back $10-16ish (you know, toppings, drinks, extras and such). Not bad for lunch coming catered, prepared-to-order straight to you!

Let us not forget that 2 decades ago, ANDY NELSON's BAR-B-QUE MOBILE FOOD Truck led the way to this industry--ANDY NELSON began taking its fabulous bar-b-q-from pork-chicken-beef, along with sides of cole slaw and beans, even cookies, could be found at parties. My dear friend, Keke-had the Andy Nelson truck for her REHERSALE WEDDING DINNER way back when! And, it was quite a novelty! To this day, we often see the Bar-B-Que truck on the highways en route to feeding a hearty crowd. We also follow @andynelsons on twitter.

Blue Grass Restaurant, Federal Hill is delighted to welcome you

Blue Grass is almost ready to bust into the Maryland area foodie world with gusto! Firmly grounded by partners, former General Manager and Chef of RYLEIGH's OYSTER, JORBIE CLARK (also GM of The Billabong Bar) and Chef PATRICK MORROW and adding to the 1st string of Baltimore's Best is Sommelier CHRISTOPHER COKER, formally, CORK's RESTAURANT and rounding the team is Ms. Kelli (now engaged ) HOPKINS formally THE WINE MARKET & MOTHER'S GRILLE, the BLUE GRASS team is in final training for a powerful opening day. This team, in itself, is stacked with some of the states finest. Including part-owner, SHANE MITCHELL whose construction company HAWKEYE CONSTRUCTION/GREEN DOOR PROPERTIES has done a terrific build-out under his brother-in-law Chris at the helm on-site.

The Federal Hill BLUE GRASS RESTAURANT tour, guided by General Manager/co-owner, Australian born, Jorbie Clark, included a behind the scenes look at what is sure to impress the community. It is upscale and luxurious, from the hardwood floors to the seat cushions to cozy, sophisticated nooks and hardware details and the best kitchen machinery. But the owners were careful to create a character that is not pretentious.

"I'm exceptionally proud of this wine list," exclaims Sommelier, Chris Coker, "We've already planned three winery dinners, a brewery dinner, bourbon dinner and maybe a wine and cheese pairing event. We are going to have loads of fun!" And trust me, we already recommend them!

Everything is designed with a warmth and welcoming personality. There will be a carryout available for alcohol, remember, this is where MICHAEL FISHMAN ran THE VINE WINE SHOP & Bar was once located so it carries a 7 day liquor license, and also hosts a smokery on site. The restaurant can seat 75 and has a great bistro type bar feel.

With a close attention to sustainable, farm-to-table feshness, fresh herbs will be growing on site and out front. And, look for a fabulous addition; a live fig tree with 6 figs on it, is being flown overseas to grace the front steps of the restaurant.

Team Blue Grass--we couldn't be more excited and thrilled for your addition to the South Baltimore foodie scene! thanks for the special tour.
Bobby Flay comes to Baltimore for a Throwdown with Rodney Henry

Bobby Flay comes to Baltimore for a Throwdown with Rodney Henry of Dangerously Delicious Pies-

Bobby Flay vs Rodney Henry Quiche Throwdown--who won? (seen left Rodney Henry with CITYPEEK.com CEO, Patti Neumann last summer sampling his then new, now top-seller, 'Baltimore Bomb' pie)

World renown chef and TV personality, Bobby Flay shot into Baltimore today, March 9, to do his famous "THROWDOWN with BOBBY FLAY" to air one Wednesday night at 9 pm on the Food Network. The event took place at Lucky's Tavern at Power Plant Live! Over 100 spectators including Rod's family, wife, mom and son were in attendance as well as Baltimore economic development notables.

So Bobby comes in and says, 'This is a throwdown. Are we doing crab?' Rodney retorted, 'no we are doing quiche!', explains Erin Hopkins who was in the crowd of spectators representing Federal Hill Main Street, the organization that promotes the restaurants, bars and shops in the Federal Hill area where Dangerously Delicious Pies is located.

What was made?

Bobby Flay made a spicy, savory quiche, eggs, cream, jalapenos, goat cheese, chorizo sausage. Chef Flay also made a pesto with jalapenos that he drizzled on top of his quiche.

Rodney Henry made his traditional-Cowboy Quiche-as noted on his business website www.dangerouspies.com -the contents of the quiche are filled "Cowboy Quiche (Everything in the House) $28. The CowboySources at the event remember hearing jalapenos were also included. Quiche is a little bit of everything. Whatever we feel like putting in a quiche that day makes it into the cowboy quiche. Potatoes, onions, bacon, ham, cheeses, you've got it.

"A lot of water was being served as the crowd tasted the spice in both entries," adds Ms. Hopkins.

Rodney played guitar for a while before the event began, perhaps to settle his nerves as he does blow off steam in a band, The Glenmont Popes. He was even accompanied on one song by his young son, Waylen. Chef Rodney writes CITYPEEK exclusively, "I have'nt felt this relaxed in a while. .I start the Pie and Rock-n-Roll tour on Friday at the DC shop. I kick off 10 days from DC to Austin, TX. Pie at every show and I get to play every night."

Judges were simply 2 of Baltimore's Finest: Cindy Wolfe, The Charleston Group, and Fireman Clarke who is Baltimore firefighter.

The Bobby Flay-Rodney Henry Show is set to air sometime in the near future Wednesday at 9 pm on the Food Network.

The best thing I ever ate episode is to air again tonight--notice where Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes says the best thing he ever ate is the Baltimore Bomb which I, CITYPEEK Patti, personally sampled last Summerwhenit was launched (seen above in picture.) This pie has quickly climbed to a top selling position. Created especially for Baltimore by one mean Dangerously Delicious Pie slinger (Ariel Winter), Again, as defined on their website-" it's loaded with Berger Cookies (a local specialty) that melt down and swirl into a sweet vanilla chess filling. This pie could be the ultimate of decadence." This pi also sells for $28. All pies can be sold by the slice, sweet or savory, there is always a decadent creation in the pie shop.

Recently Chef Henry has branched into the DC market opening a shop in the district at 1339 H Street, NE as well. Dangerously Delicious Pies used to have a location in Bethany Beach, Delaware

Ghirardelli Chocolate broadcasting ' favorite Ghirardelli "moments" in New York's Timeses Square

As part of a new sweepstakes promoting its chocolate squares, Ghirardelli Chocolate is broadcasting consumer-generated comments about peoples' favorite Ghirardelli "moments" in New York's Times Square, as well as streaming them live on the brand's site. Fans are being asked to visit the "Million Moments of Timeless Pleasure" sweepstakes site area (www.ghirardellimoments.com), register and type in a 75-character message about when and where they most enjoy eating Ghirardelli Squares chocolates. People may register for the sweeps by offering their "moments" any time between now and Oct. 31 (one moment per person per day may be entered), but only comments posted between now and the end of April are eligible for possible broadcasting in Times Square.

"Our customers have told us that there are a million different moments during the day when they reach for our premium chocolate, such as for a burst of energy after a long day or as a special reward after a big success," said Ghirardelli VP, marketing Mona Maher, explaining the creative inspiration for the promotion.

The grand prize for the sweeps is a trip for two to one of four world-famous squares: Times Square, Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, St. Marks Square in Venice or Trafalgar Square in London. The sweeps also offers thousands of instant-win prizes of bags of chocolate and gift baskets, and one prize of free chocolate for a year. Simultaneously, Ghirardelli is touring 10 major U.S. cities, distributing one million pieces of Squares chocolate along the way. Consumers can locate the Squares team and follow it on Twitter at @GhirardelliTour. also @citypeekpatti

Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) Unleashed DC Restaurant Deals

The Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) announced today that the “Unleashed” Restaurants promo listing will go live on Wednesday, February 24 at 12:00 noon at www.ramw.org. There are over 90 listings representing over 100 restaurants offering specials for the Unleashed week, March 1 through 7.

“This will be a great way for patrons to ‘unleash’ the pent up dining passions that have been so constrained over this winter,” said Lynne Breaux, President of RAMW. “And it’s not just dining; this is also about social contact, conviviality, decompression and so much more that we tend not to think about until it is taken away. Think of our “Unleashed” week as an intense, really big, group therapy session.”

The promotion is simple and sweet: participating restaurants have sent RAMW a short description of their “Unleashed” week special with their contact info and website link. The resulting list will be accessible from the RAMW home page, www.ramw.org beginning at 12:00 noon tomorrow. Specials will run the gamut – something for everyone.

Established in 1920, the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington's vision was to unite restaurateurs and food service industry professionals of the Washington area. Today, RAMW has more than 700 members, and is the voice of establishments ranging from casual eateries to internationally-acclaimed fine dining restaurants.

Bobby Flay, who hosted shows on Food Network, stars in a new show on the Cooking Channel

Another Cable Helping for Food Lovers-Jim Cooper/Associated Press
Bobby Flay, of Mesa Grill in New York, has hosted shows on the Food Network and will star in a show on the Cooking Channel.

Scripps, the owner of the Food Network, plans to turn on the Cooking Channel on Memorial Day, May 31, this year, enhancing its position in the category of kitchen programming. Before meetings with advertisers, the company is announcing half a dozen series for the channel on Friday, including new ones starring Bobby Flay and Rachael Ray. It might as well be called Food Network, the Sequel.

About two years ago, when the company started considering a second culinary channel, “the advertiser demand for Food was outstripping the audience growth,” Jon Steinlauf, the senior vice president for ad sales for Scripps Networks, said this week. “Therefore, creating a second channel started making more sense.”

The Cooking Channel, which is a replacement for Fine Living Network, FLN, a low-rated lifestyle channel, was announced last fall. At that time, Scripps said the channel would focus on information and instructional programming, much as the Food Network did before it gravitated toward higher-rated reality competitions like “The Next Food Network Star.” In recent months, Scripps has altered its plans for the second channel to include more entertaining fare.

“We listened to the audience and realized they weren’t necessarily saying they just wanted more instruction or more reality or more travel shows. They just wanted more,” said Michael Smith, the general manager of the Cooking Channel.

The craving for food programming is insatiable, Scripps executives like to say. (They rarely pass up opportunities for food puns; the first press release for the Cooking Channel said that “the time has come for us to have our cake and eat it, too.”) The ratings were up markedly for the Food Network last year, and shows set in kitchens have flourished on other channels.

“When you see Fox lining up its third Gordon Ramsay cooking show in prime time, I think food’s arrived as a mainstream genre,” Mr. Steinlauf said....

Mirrored channels are not unprecedented on cable, where further fragmentation seems certain. ESPN has ESPN2, MTV has MTV2, and CNN has HLN, formerly called Headline News. Mr. Smith says he expects the Cooking Channel’s core viewers will be the ones he calls “hyper-passionate fans” of Food — the recipe bloggers, the Yelp reviewers, the amateur chefs.

“It’s all those people we saw during Cablevision,” said Cindy McConkey, a Scripps spokeswoman, referring to Scripps’ protracted fight with the cable distributor over higher subscriber fees for the Food Network. Thousands of fans flooded Cablevision with complaints when the network was removed from the distributor’s lineup in January, reinforcing the view that it had amassed a major following.

Will those followers want to watch a second channel?
On the Food Network, “there’s a lot of things we just don’t have time to cover,” Mr. Smith said. As implausible as that may sound, he makes a strong case for it.

As the Food Network’s ratings have risen, its definition of success for new shows has changed accordingly, squeezing out space for niche shows. That is where programmers at the Cooking Channel say their opportunity lies. The new channel will have room for programs about alcoholic beverages, brunch, low-calorie eating, and food history, among other topics. A broad range of instructional shows during the day will give way to more shows driven by storytelling at night.

Ms. Ray, the celebrity chef turned talk show host, will headline “A Week in a Day,” a one-hour show about stocking up on the week’s meals. Mr. Flay will be the host of a half-hour show, “Brunch With Bobby.” Emeril Lagasse will present “Fresh Food Fast,” a show that focuses on organic and locally grown ingredients. The channel is also importing several hosts from Food Network Canada, including Chuck Hughes, Roger Mooking and Laura Calder.

The Cooking Channel will cross-pollinate some programming with the Food Network. It is contemplating a postgame show for “The Next Food Network Star,” and an instructional series, “Cook Like an Iron Chef.”

Scripps will package the Cooking Channel and the Food Network when it sells upfront ads this spring.

While the roughly 40 advertisers that paid in advance for FLN inventory this season have the option to withdraw their ads from the Cooking Channel, “no one has said no yet,” said Karen Grinthal, who oversees the food category of ad sales for Scripps.

Source: NYT online-February 19, 2010, on page B4 New York edition.

Famed Boccaccio is sold at auction block to Peter Angelos!

BOCCACCIO of LITTLE ITALY SOLD! Hours ago, a piece of Baltimore history exchanged hands as BOCCACCIO'S Restaurant of Little Italy was sold at the auction block for $1,450,000. Orchestrated by AJ Billig & Co, the sale included turn-key operation along with parking lot, wine cellar, 7 day liquor liscence and working kitchen and even the artwork on walls.

Noted purchaser was thought to be a 'prominent, high profile attorney' who was represented by phone with a bidder on site. We confirmed it and yes, it is PETER ANGELOS, the proud new owner who was determined that the local institution is preserved.

"I believe the sale price was less than what we believe the value of the property is worth, "states Giovonna Aquia of Cafe Gia where we feasted on a grilled caesar with salmon prepared perfectly by Chef Gianfranco for lunch after the sale. Giovanna mentioned that she had her very own table known as "Gia's table" in the dining room where she conducted important meetings, meals with friends and sealed memories."

Little Italy Restaurant Owners/Managers seen in attendance were Nino Germano of LA SCALA RISTORANTE (check out their new Salumeria), Giovonna Aquia of CAFE GIA, Mary Ann Cricchio of DaMimmo, Joe Di Pasquale, architect Peter Fillat, MO'S SEAFOOD's Farhad Jafari. Also saw Rob Roblin and his TV 11 crew. See WBAL Video of BOCCACCIO Auction: www.wbaltv.com/video/22594854/index.html

Many thousand of memories are left in the melting snow and we cannot wait to post new ones in what is to come.

Brunch @ Langermann's

So, I asked CityPeek Patti where to go for Valentine's Day Brunch and she suggested Langermann's in the Can Company in Canton. As we had already heard good things from others, we thought it would be easy to walk down and give it a try on Valentine's Day. Good choice! At first glance, the over-sized, open room greeted us with a modern, but approachable vibe. As we nestled into a comfortable and romantic corner banquette, we were welcomed by our server Joe, who, to my delight, had 2 complimentary mimosas in hand! (Reg. price $7 each) As we perused the menu, which which also had a modern, yet approachable design, I was happy to see a brief, but delicious selection. I'm not a fan of restaurants that offer 100 items. I'd rather see 8 dishes prepared perfectly than 25 mediocre meals. Items ranged from biscuit battered french toast to the smoked salmon scrambler. Not feeling breakfast I chose house burger, while the boyfriend opted for the delicious sounding Eggs Yucatan (Spicy Sausage Patties Topped with Poached Eggs and Hollandaise Sauce atop Toasted English Muffin.) Yum! While we were waiting for our meal I inquired about the design of the menu (being a graphic designer, when I see something I like I can't help myself.) That's when we met Mark. (I think I got his name correctly, but not planning in advance to write this entry I didn't take notes or photos.) Guessing he was an owner, we chatted for about solid 10 minutes about the design, intent of the restaurant, menu contents, the neighborhood, etc. He was friendly and knowledgeable and a great self-promoter without being remotely arrogant. The end result of the conversation being my desire to return for dinner without having tasted brunch yet. So, back to the food. Not much to say except it was delicious. Simple, good ingredients prepared well. The only thing missing was the Old Bay we requested for the Bloody Mary - I'd say one very minor misstep in our otherwise very satisfying experience. Which, by the way, was quickly forgotten with the arrival of the (also complementary) chocolate covered strawberries and beignets which topped off our meal. Add coffee, and our morning was complete. I would definitely recommended everyone give this place a try and we look forward to dinner soon. Can't wait to see if it's as tasty as brunch. PS: Don't forget to try the yummy cheesy grits!! A welcome relief from the traditional home fries (also available.)
