Le Nozze di Figaro is generously underwritten in part by Sandra and Malcolm Berman.
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
based on La folle journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais
Sung in Italian with English surtitles
Mozart’s biting yet charming indictment of the aristocracy is a supremely elegant and tuneful work. Figaro must defend his fiancée, Susanna, from the clutches of the Count, who through his aristocratic privilege has certain “rights” to her prior to her wedding night. Add to this a loving wife who feels the sting of her husband’s betrayal, a young officer who cannot take his mind off the joys of the fair sex, and various and sundry other characters both genteel and rustic, and you have the elements for a thought-provoking yet entertaining opera which through the genius of Mozart delves fully into the heart of humankind.
