Israel Travel: "Traveling to ISRAEL feels more safe than Baltimore" 03-2006
I was recently a victim of a breaking & entering one Friday afternoon in my office in Federal Hill, Baltimore. The intruder scaled a fence, climbed up five flights outside, shimmied a roof and walked the gutter, like a tight-rope. Then he pushed open window that was ajar to let the fresh air in, punched out my screen and that is where I caught him.Thankfully, ok, but very shaken, I was able to scare him away and call 911. So, I move ahead...When planning my trip to Israel, friends of all religions ask, aren't you afraid to go to Israel? Is it safe? Will you be ok? Safe, ha, it was glorious! www.CITYPEEK.com ceo, Patti Neumann just returned from an inspiring mssion to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Israel attending the Tel Aviv One, the international young leadership conference of UJC/the Federations of North America, March 2-10. More than 1,200 young Jewish adults from across USA and around the world gathered to forge connections among themselves and with Israel, and to ensure a new generation of committed Jewish leadership. Patti was leading a group of 40 young adults from Baltimore, MD USA via www.associated.org
"To me, the trip was about connecting with Israelis and American Jews, and seeing from the front lines what life is like for Israelis today," Josh Axelrod, Philadelphia, PA.
"To me TA1 was about showing the Young leaders from Los Angeles where their dollars go. We can talk about all the good they can do, but to show them. As the saying goes...a picture is worth a thousand words," states Heather Greenberg, Young Leadership Division Co-Chair, Los Angeles, CA.
"Making friends with Florence from Dadar, India, a town of just 5000 Jews, (Baltimore has 110,000) was special. We bonded thru our commitment to giving back to the world & as people with similar values. And to think Florence was scared to come because she dresses differently (more beautifully if you ask me!) than Americans? Connecting with her is what is all about for me, " Patti Neumann, Tel Aviv 1 Chair, Baltimore, MD
The Tel Aviv 3-day event, sponsored by UJC's National Young Leadership Cabinet,an elite philanthropic group, (www.ujc.org)
The group started the trip in Jerusalem with a bike ride thru the dessert , fresh off the 11 hour plane ride on EL AL with 40 participants from Baltimore whom I led. In Jerusalem, we visiting the holy Western Wall (Kotel), got a private guided tour of the tunnels beneath the wall. Did you know there is one of the heaviest stones in the world there, weighing as much as 20 elephants? We shed tears and remembered loved ones at Yad Vesham, Israel's Holocaust Memorial Museum, climbed Masada, floated in Dead Sea, walked Ben Jehuda Market area, ate authentic shwarma meals, sang, toured and slept little at our luxurious, David Citadel Hotel. Quickly I shopped @ The 7th Gallery showcasing 50 Israeli artists Jewelry & Art. (11 Yoel Salomon St. Jerusalem)
We freely and safely traveled throughout the country for hands-on exposures to the fabric of Israeli life, culture, business, and society, and the critical involvement of the Jewish federation system here through initiatives and overseas agencies including the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Ethiopian National Project. Learn more about these and other undertakings @ www.ujc.org. I had an Israeli Wine tasting & class (Golan Heights is the largest, ie, Yarden) with The Grape Man (www.grape-man.com) in Jaffe, then walked the beach back to the David InterContinental Hotel Tel Aviv (12 Kaufman St). Wonderfully staffed, great food and in-hotel shops, highly recommend this Tel Aviv InterContinental Hotel Toda GM David Cohen. Israeli wineries came to the Tel Aviv InterContinental lobby for the confence to sample & order! Israel used to have 15 wineries, now it has 200 importing 15 million bottles a year! Boutique wineries are coming in vogue in Israel. Another evening, all 1,200 attendees split up and ate dinner out feeding themselves and the Tel Aviv hospitality industry. Then some enjoyed Tel Aviv nightlife @ the famed Whiskey-a-go-go where they played 80's American disco music til the wee hours.
I recommend shopping on Shenken Street in Tel Aviv; buy jewelry & judaica from Michal Negrin www.michalnegrin.co.il (costs 3x more @ Neiman's, US Michal Negrin shops). There is now a wonderful Negrin store at Gate C at Ben Gurion Airport! I got a original David Gerstein Sculpture www.davidgerstein.com of Lance Armstrong on a bike! What better, a fellow American, cancer survivor with an Israeli connection. I walked by a SBARRO Pizza in Jerusalem, home of a homocide (it is NOT suicide, it is homicide) bombing, said a prayer and paused. IT felt so safe on Ben Yehuda street, partying in Tel Aviv, no bombs, no fights, just fun. Sometimes Baltimore feels less safe. What is this press in America all about? Is it propaganda, bad PR? Because we saw no crime in Israel, we felt safe, we had a ball!
In Tel Aviv, more than 100 field visits took place, with excursions introducing the vitality of culture, commerce and business, sport, arts, history, cuisine and the diversity of the Tel Aviv coastal city. Baltimore visited its sister city of Ashkelon and even had a present from Baltimore Mayor O'Malley to Ashkelonian Mayor Roni Mehatzri. Pittsburgh visited its sister city of Karmiel & Misgav, Chicago: Kiryat Gat/Lachish/Shafir, Miami, Akiva, Los Angeles's city is the southern tourist town of Eilat. You see Sister City Partnerships via the local Jewish Charities/Federation system help American Jews be connected to Israel. We partner with various cities connecting, befriending, aiding in sociao-economic issues. Recently, Ashkelonian women visited to Walters Art Museum & loved it! Now I visited Askkelon seeing where our money goes and how they live as a community.
Howard Rieger, UJC presiden, underscored, "There are things that we can make happen collectively that we couldnt make happen alone. So thank you for coming. ..for caring. Thank you for becoming involved and for recognizing our tradition of making some difference in this world. " And to The Associated Jewish Federation of Baltimore (www.assoicated.org), for my 3rd trip to Israel, I say, Shalom. Peace.
